ContentsAppearanceEdit Shanks is a fairly tall male (simply under two meters), sturdy, tan-complexioned, and in the prime of his mid-adulthood. Amongst the Four Emperors previous and present he stands apart as the smallest, most normal-sized without a doubt, the others being different degrees of inhumanly proportioned. True to his epithet, Shanks has clearly red hair: normally depicted throughout media as deep-crimsonish. Deserving of note is that, uniquely amongst all characters yet seen, even ones with similar hair tone, Shanks' hair is the sole one filled with grayscale in the black-and-white manga (instead of tattooed black or left white). His first-seen hairstyle was a straight, middle-parted one kept loosely down to nape length, with much shorter (at eye level), curtained bangs in the front.  In later looks (at 10 years older), he is shown with a little longer hair, wavier and more slicked back than before except for some couple of strands he lets fall down the sides of his face, pressed farther sideward than said prior bangs.

Clothes-wise, Shanks used to use a certain straw hat gotten from Gol D. Roger (his former captain) that was associated with his image up until he passed it on to Luffy. Otherwise, his outfit constantly includes a sweeping long, sleeveless black cape with a high collar (in the anime bearing a lighter, gray within), and under it a simple, white t-shirt half-buttoned up, exposing the middle of his chest and upper abs. Additionally, Shanks is constantly seen wearing trousers cut below the knee, gathered halfway up the shin. At First (Chapter 1) the pair was a somewhat loose, plain-brown one with golden buttons down the outer leg sides, and with a red sash around his waist to keep his t-shirt tucked inside. Later, he is seen wearing a various, mildly baggier set of pants with a green-yellow, indiscernible flower pattern (now revealing plenty leg hair), and his t-shirt is overlooked of his sash, which is now shown holding his saber at his best side. Finally, his shoes consists of easy brown shoes, their soles gray-studded. After the timeskip, he is at some point seen wearing various pants yet once again, light-colored with a rose pattern.
